WASIM ZAID

Architect & Artist

Coming from an architectural background I’ve always had great admiration for art and the conceptual thinking processes involved in it. My work focuses on local material that can be utilised to display a meaningful idea where people can relate to and build stories upon. Aiming to create a tangible yet conceptual artworks, my practice is influenced by my surroundings and my approach of perceiving, analysing and understanding those little things that makes an experience worth living. An important aspect that influenced me was the multicultural background I’ve developed over the years while living abroad which enriched my cultural dosage and led me to create my own fusion of those cultures.

As I always say: “an artist is a prisoner to his imagination, jail with no chains”.

A conceptual artwork that embodies the artist’s vision of life and the succession of generations represented by the succession of strands of natural hair heading to the circular centre in an organic overlapping manner that simulates the intertwining paths of human beings.

Inimical nostalgia (Cotton candy Sculpture): As a reflexive reaction, some people continue to feed their ego on the glory of the past to attain personal relevance in the present. Motivated by the scientific successes of their ancient civilizations, this appealing sugary yet faltering reminiscences is becoming a stumbling block for progress in the present.

This work reveals the necessity to have a complex cultural relationship with the past in order to benefit from it in a constructive way.

It is likely that our “fabrication” of progress will only push us further away from it.

Exhibited at DARAT AL FUNUN (Khalid Shoman foundation) main building among well-established artists from around the world during the exhibition titled "Truth is black, write over it with a mirages light".
Using the traditional sand art practiced in Jordan to fill discarded fluorescent tubes with pixelated patterns.
Egotistic Misrule; Inspired by traditional patterns, this work reflects the struggle between individuality and society at large. Under certain circumstances individual pixels can rise above their personal interest and form a collective pattern, while retaining their individuality, movement, and freedom.

We all share the same core despite our external differences, the colored sand in this case resembles our uniqueness yet similarities by using different arrangements of pixels in one tube to create the collective pattern.

FluoreSAND got nominated! - Over 2.800 artists from 97 countries applied for the BLOOOM Award 2018  (Germany) – FluoreSAND is one of the 175 nominees for the prize.

Critical Mass; This pattern reflects the critical mass, a term that indicates the sufficient number of adopters of innovation in a social system, so that the rate of adoption becomes self-sustaining and creates further growth. The layers of sand are positioned to resemble the transition phase of a critical mass affecting the existing mass.

The sand particles resembles the human presence and necessity in such movement.
